Embracing Wabi-Sabi in a Compact 80m² Home: Where Small Spaces Meet Big Ambience - August 2024
Unleashing Unique Design in Every Corner
Wabi-sabi, a style often associated with spacious homes, is not exclusive to large spaces. Even compact homes can beautifully embody this aesthetic. Let’s explore a remarkable 80m² residence that exemplifies this perfectly.
Today, we step into a small yet mightily atmospheric home. Despite its modest size, it doesn’t compromise on functionality or ambiance.
The Entryway: A Harmonious Mélange Upon entering, you're greeted by an artful mix of square-patterned tiles and wooden flooring, arranged in a graceful, curving pattern to demarcate the space. This fusion of wooden elements with terrazzo creates a subtly soothing environment.
Living Room: A Symphony of Wood The living room features wooden beam ceilings and wall-mounted wooden shelves, alongside a unique wood-paneled niche. Each element contributes to an overall feeling of warmth and nostalgia.
A Touch of Vintage and Wabi-Sabi The entire house is a blend of retro and wabi-sabi styles, brimming with an almost tangible sense of atmosphere and ritual.
Functional yet Aesthetic Entryway The entrance is adorned with square tiles that extend to the shoe-changing bench and dressing mirror, forming a practical 'dust zone'. This smart design ensures that rainwater and outdoor grime don't reach the living area.
Innovative Flooring Transitions Rather than conventional straight lines, the flooring at the intersection of the entrance and dining area features a gentle S-curve, thoughtfully separating the two areas.
Dining Area: A Blend of Old and New The custom-made dining table along the wall, with its terrazzo surface, exudes an antique charm. Vertical terrazzo wall panels add a strong design element to the space. Complementing these are walnut-colored chairs with textured patterns, enhancing the wabi-sabi feel.
Living Room Ceiling and Lighting The wooden ceiling in the living room is uniquely paired with a combination of glass pendant and tube lights, creating a distinctive and well-lit space.
TV Wall and Fireplace Flanking the TV wall are wood niches with three-tiered shelves, under which are slim cabinets. The TV is mounted in the middle, and below it is a fireplace-style space, housing a flame-effect humidifier – a creative and functional feature.
Bedroom: A Sanctuary of Vintage Elements The bedroom features floor-to-ceiling wardrobes with rattan doors, offering excellent ventilation. The bed headboard, also adorned with rattan elements, infuses the room with a sense of vintage elegance.
This 80m² home stands as a testament to the fact that size doesn't limit the scope of design. It proves that with thoughtful and innovative use of space, elements of wabi-sabi can bring richness and character to even the smallest of homes.
